PAS Technology has implemented QIF standard

PAS Technology participates in development of QIF metrology standard

PAS Technology is fully compliant with newly released Quality Information Framework (QIF) specification.

The Dimensional Metrology Standards Consortium (DMSC) has released for testing and public comment the Quality Measurement Results (QMResults) schema.  It is the first of a set of planned schemas integrated into a single framework of XML schemas called the Quality Information Framework (QIF).  The overall purpose of QIF is to facilitate exchange of manufacturing measurement information between computer-aided quality processes through the use of standard, non-proprietary formats.  The QMResults schema is sufficiently robust to handle complex data from coordinate measuring machines as well as simple data from calipers, micrometers, and visual observations.

The DMSC invites the public to download and perform tests on the QMResults schema and its supporting QIF Library files.  To download these files, at no cost, go to www.qifstandards.org.  A simple account setup is all that is required. The current schema version is tagged as V0.91, since it has not yet been fully documented or tested in pilot projects, even though it is the product of months of development by industry domain experts and information modeling experts. 

 

QMResults provides a standard information model encompassing the entire realm of quality measurement, including features, characteristics (tolerances), and other quality related information.  The QMResults schema defines the structure of XML files able to transport all quality related data associated with the inspection results according to the ASME Y14.5 1994 and 2009 standards. A QMResults file can then be read by consuming applications performing manufacturing production process evaluation, statistical process control, or first article inspection.

 

The next steps for the DMSC in the coming year will be to fully document the QMResults schema, incorporate comments from public testing, and expand usage documentation and formal specifications.  The next QIF schema planned for release is Quality Measurement Plans (QMPlans), which will define all information required to generate part measurement programs on any quality measurement device.

PAS Technology released its new PAS Inspection Lifecycle Management Suite (ILM)

PAS Technology is known for developing programs to automate quality assurance of complex parts, which it identifies as one of the most costly steps in the manufacturing supply chain. It develops software based on advanced feature recognition algorithms, so users can create CMM programs from any CAD file. Now, it’s reaching into the emerging dimension of information technology known as lifecycle management.

“Product lifecycle management” is a process for managing the costs, risks, and benefits of a product from, from design concept through design and manufacturing, to delivery, and service, and even replacement. PLM software for manufacturing coordinates information and resources that producers and their suppliers and customers need to define, maintain, and share product and compliance data, from concept to replacement.

Lately, the lifecycle management initiative is encompassing manufacturing steps with an increasing degree of specificity.

PAS Technology released its new PAS Inspection Lifecycle Management Suite so that manufacturers (like machine shops) can establish a complete, automated inspection process from a CAD model through to the inspection results. The ILM automates the inspection process thoroughly, eliminating the need for data translation throughout inspection and creating seamless integration of design, manufacturing, and inspection. Users can generate inspection plans directly on-model and output inspection results to FAI-compliant (or other) forms. Noting that it delivers visual inspection results, PAS stated the software allows users to engage in interactive analysis at every step of the inspection process.

The PAS Technology Inspection Lifecycle Management (ILM) Suite consists of three modules:

PAS CMM Viewer: The base module lets users throughout the product supply chain view, collaborate, analyze, simulate, and comment on inspection results. At any stage of the inspection process, authorized users can view the inspection CAD model and analyze detailed inspection results, inspection program code, and other related information. Users also can simulate inspections and deploy “what-if” scenarios.

In addition, PAS CMM Viewer features “on-model communication,” so users are able to add comments directly to the inspected model, to simplify collaboration with team members, customers, and throughout the supply chain.

PAS CMM Engineering: The second level of functionality provides engineers with additional capabilities to transform the CAD model of a component automatically into instructions that can be output directly to the inspection report form (FAI or any custom form). It’s an automated inspection model preparation package. The software streamlines the inspection process by promoting standardization and data integrity. PAS also indicated the module eliminates manual inspection interpretation, and helps users cut inspection programming time by up to 95%.

From a PC workstation, users can install complete inspection instructions and balloon drawings directly on the inspected model. CAD CMM Engineering ensures that reliable inspection results are reported directly to predefined forms (including FAI forms), eliminating the time needed to correlate results with an unfamiliar inspection report. Once the model preparation is finalized, the software automatically composites all CAD and drawing data with CMM inspection analysis and inspection instructions for the actual inspection.

PAS CMM Inspection: The most advanced module offers the complete capabilities of the ILM Suite, for end-to-end CMM programming and inspection automation for any CMM machine. It is an automated inspection program that analyzes inspected CAD models with the associated annotations, parameters, and GD&T. It generates inspection programs automatically for any CMM machine, eliminating the labor-intensive task of creating CMM program manually. An organization’s CMM experts are able to focus on their core inspection skills, which include high-level engineering capabilities and geometrical and inspection regulation knowledge.

PAS CMM inspection also allows CMM experts to generate any type of report form, including FAI standard forms, and read directly from the CMM machine inspection results to the pre-defined form. PAS CMM inspection helps inspection departments become more productive, cut costs, eliminate inspection bottlenecks, and expedite delivery times.

New software from PAS Technology provides an automated link between the CAD domain of the 3-D model and drawing and the inspection domain of DMIS code.

Inspection, as any quality professional knows, is not without its challenges. Though an essential part of the manufacturing process, it can be both expensive and labor intensive, and create bottlenecks in getting products out the door.

Coordinate measuring machine (CMM) programming in particular is often a bottleneck in the entire design and manufacturing process, says Sam Golan, president and chief executive officer of PAS Technology (Cresskill, NJ), and the demand for highly accurate and complex parts increases the need for a better CMM inspection process.

CMM departments today may be considered one of the most expensive in the supply chain, Golan says. In addition, growing global competition is forcing companies to cut costs and trim delivery times.

“Definitely the industry needs to change,” Golan says, “And we help to do it as much as we can.”

New software from PAS Technology provides an automated link between the CAD domain of the 3-D model and drawing and the inspection domain of DMIS code.

PAS Technology’s CMM solution is an automated CMM programming tool that can save time, reduce cost and expedite delivery time, Golan says. Going from a computer-aided design (CAD) or computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) model to complete CMM program takes minutes—rather than hours or days and eliminates CMM department bottlenecks.

 

It is currently the only solution that can generate CMM programs for multiple machines and metrology environments, Golan says, adding that it can help the industry become more competitive and lean, and change the notion of outsourcing. Golan is not a fan of outsourcing outside of North America and wants companies to consider the real cost of outsourcing.

AS CMM supports all CAD standards such as STEP, IGES, DXF, VDA and PARASOLID. It does not generate reports; it generates a DMI file that will “tell” the current software what to inspect, how to inspect with the relevant tolerances and what report to generate. It generates two files, a CAD file and a DMIS program file. After those files are imported and converted to the operator’s current metrology software, it will appear on the screen as native program created by the operator’s current software, allowing operators to edit, modify and alter any string as they usually do with their own programs, Golan says.

The software was developed in Israel about five years ago. It is used by large aerospace, optical, defense and medical companies in Israel and the United States, and was released in the United States in late 2008. It is available for a flat fee, and PAS Technology recommends and provides three-day onsite training so operators can learn how the product works with their machine and their parts.

PAS Technology offers a 14-day test drive period, which includes two-hour, one-on-one Web training, generating a CMM program by the test driver with expert support, running a simulation on a test driver’s CMM environment, and addressing the test driver’s specific needs and challenges.

The time and labor to set up a CMM can be reduced as much as 80 percent using PAS CMM software. PAS CMM uses a combination of sophisticated 3-D model feature recognition and probe control to almost completely automate the generation of the code to control the CMM.

The current economic downturn may have reduced a company’s business, but it has not reduced the requirements associated with doing business. This is particularly true for the numerous activities associated with technical data interpretation and application. For example, although the quantity of parts to be produced may be significantly less than last year, everything associated with the technical data package must still be addressed. This includes reviewing the constituent documents to determine accuracy and completeness, setting up first article inspections, generating manufacturing process plans, and so on. In this period of reduced resources, there is even less margin for error. This means that those companies that get it right the first time have a distinct competitive advantage over those that can’t. The former are more productive, more cost-efficient, better able to meet schedules, and more valuable to their customers who are being whipsawed by rapidly changing economic conditions. Fortunately, there are a variety of reasonably priced software tools available to greatly reduce the occurrence of errors. These tools enable the user to dramatically enhance accuracy and productivity when working with a customer’s technical requirements. These tools help to identify a part’s detailed characteristics, derive specific process requirements, generate process plans, and automate the creation of inspection plans.

The CMM program is an essential complement to first article inspection and process planning. It closes the loop in measuring the actual results for the specific part characteristics. In most companies, CMM programmers typically review hard copies of the drawing and manually enter codes for probing the part. For a complex part, the labor effort can take days, and the manual setup of the CMM program is susceptible to errors.

How to Reduce the CMM Programming Bottleneck

PAS CMM from PAS Technology represents a quantum jump in reducing CMM programming time. PAS CMM uses sophisticated feature recognition and probe control to almost completely automate the DMIS code generation.

CMM manufacturers spend much of their development time and money creating better machines. CMM manufacturers see the creation of software program and drive their machines as necessary, but it is not their primary focus.

Programming a CMM using only the software supplied by the manufacturer is far more tedious and time consuming than programming a CNC with any of the current CAM packages. In fact, it frequently is similar to programming a CNC machine by writing one line of G-code at a time.
